An overview of EYP sessions

There are around 38 countries across Europe involved in EYP, and collectively EYP runs over 120 events (sessions) every year. These sessions aim to:

  • Raise awareness about current European issues and encouraging active citizenship.
  • Promote cross-cultural dialogue and understanding amongst young people from around Europe.
  • Develop a wide range of skills in young people.
  • Provide a place in which young people across Europe can freely express their opinions on topical issues facing Europe.

How EYP sessions are structured

All EYP sessions follow a similar programme, though this may be altered slightly depending on the length and scope of the event. All multi-day EYP events will follow this structure:

  1. Teambuilding: The delegates are divided into their chosen committees with students from other delegations. They complete teambuilding games and activities to strengthen the bonds within the committee.
  2. Committee Work: The delegates start working on a resolution in their committees to current issue in European politics, following the structure and style of resolutions written in the European Parliament.
  3. General Assembly: After constructing their resolutions, committees will debate one another following the model of the European Parliament. Each committee will be given an opportunity to defend their own resolution. At the end of each debate, the resolution that was discussed is voted upon by the delegates.
  4. Cultural Activities: Some EYP sessions include cultural activities where individuals can share their own culture and learn a little about other cultures as well. Some examples of cultural activities include Eurovillage (where participants can bring foods from their countries for others to try), and cultural days out such as visiting a museum.

Where EYPUK fits in

EYPUK National Sessions follow a similar structure to other sessions, which is detailed above. The only difference is that our Regional Sessions are only one-day in length, and therefore only include the General Assembly element. Delegations will be provided with pre-written resolutions to debate on the day.

The different roles at EYP sessions

At an EYP session there are all sorts of different roles that young people can engage with. In this section, you can find information about the different roles available. Each of the Officials roles are also led by a more senior member of their team, who can guide them and their fellow team members throughout a session.

Delegates

  • The individuals for whom the EYP session is organised. Delegates will be placed into committees at the beginning of a session, who they will work with for the remainder of the event. In their committees and with the help of their Chairpersons, delegates will construct resolutions to a particular contemporary issue in Europe, and then defend their resolution in the General Assembly.

Officials

Organisers

  • Plan and put together a session in advance, and are responsible for everything running smoothly and all participants being fully provided for. EYP sessions are organised by teams of young volunteers, who are dedicated to providing session participants with positive experiences and ensuring that their needs are met throughout.

Chairpersons (‘Chairs’)

  • Guide the Delegates of their respective committees through Teambuilding, Committee Work and General Assembly. As experienced EYP participants, Chairs act as facilitators to resolution building and debate. This can also be a good entry-level role for those wishing to engage with Officials roles.

Jury Members

  • Select delegates at Regional and National Selection Conferences to go to other sessions abroad.

Media Team Members (MTMs)

  • Produce media content including posts, projects, and videos during a session to be posted online. The work of  MTMs serves to capture the precious moments and memories formed at a session, so that they can be preserved and looked back on for years to come.
