Things I Wish I'd Known Before Attending an International Session

Hello, Shwmae!

I’m Rhydian from Cardiff, and I recently attended The Hague International Session in April!

Firstly, I want to stress how amazing the experience was—from meeting brilliant people from all across Europe to contributing academically to the session’s work.

Here are a few things I wish I’d known before attending...

  • Other countries take the EuroVillage/EuroDessert (an event where every country brings its food) very seriously. The UK needs to up its game—think bigger than biscuits (maybe even bring some tea!).

  • The days are long and free time is limited, so make sure you get plenty of sleep and spend your time getting to know others, rather than rotting away in your room!

  • Bring a flag. What better way to represent your country than with its flag? I brought the Welsh flag, and the draig (dragon) was a favourite.

  • Bring snacks. You might not have many chances to leave the venues to grab food, and the local cuisine might not always be to your taste—so stock up on Percy Pigs for personal consumption.

  • Everyone is amazing, and it’s worth getting to know a wide variety of people rather than sticking to those you may be familiar with. I particularly loved hanging out with members of the Irish and Czech Delegations.

  • Finally, think about some unique or interesting facts about yourself. You’re bound to be asked during team-building, and it’s a great way to spark conversation with others.
